Why You Should Appreciate Others More

Why should you appreciate others more?

Appreciation is a tiny great thing you can do for someone today.

I was talking with a colleague when I realized how much impact a simple appreciation can do. Our conversation went from studies to our own families, from funny to a serious conversation. What caught my attention was him telling what he was like before.

He said he was a victim of bullying. He was raised from a broken family and had a difficult childhood. He experienced poverty and received numerous insults from other people.

He's a silent man, but after years of knowing him, I realized how much he has changed from a not-going-to-talk type of person to a good leader. One person who changed his views in life? He confessed that it was our professor before.

Our professor told him that he has potential despite of being non-talkative and lacking confidence. He said that he was happy that someone saw within him and appreciated his works.

But, I think, it's not just the feeling of delight that mattered. What's important is that, he believed it. There is a conviction that, "I can." And he did.

Appreciation is such a tiny element, but impacts on a large scale. Remember when your boss commends you for something, it stayed in your mind. You become more eager and motivated. When someone tells you “you look good”. You feel good with yourself.

It’s the transfer of words into a feeling that can mold someone’s character. You’ll never know how your words of appreciation work with someone.

But what could be the other benefits of speaking out of appreciation to others? Here is a list:

1. It brightens your mood.

It's amazing that appreciation recognizes good things. Good words and good thoughts for someone are products of your positivity and well-being.

It's impossible to appreciate something when you are consumed with anger or displeasure. Sarcasm kicks instead. So practice the art of appreciation and start genuinely recognizing someone's good deed today. It would brighten yours and other people’s day.

2. It builds good relationships.

Friendships and relationships last longer when you appreciate each other. You care, you think of them. You sometimes make fun of each other, but still truly care. You appreciate them for what they are. You enjoy their company and happy with what you do together. The fun and good memories you are making, it's good for your heart and soul.

3. You create a character.

Small things are the big things. I remembered when someone appreciated my works. I know I still have a long way to go. But, because of these people who appreciate and comment on what I’m doing, I try to learn more about writing. Here I am, trying my best to write and be better every day. Little by little, writing has become my character.

It works with children, too. Appreciate what a child does well, even how small. Guide them until they their knowledge deepens. Later, you’ll see that he puts effort to learn something with what he's good at. That's because you made them believe that they are good and can do better.

This is not only for kids, but for everyone. You can motivate them with a simple appreciation. A good motivator touches not only the mind, but also the heart and the hands.

4. You inspire others.

It might be someone who’s unsure of what he’s doing now and just a little push is needed. Give a moment to appreciate what he has done and always look forward to what he can do more. Focus on that. Your words can touch someone deeply, push them to not fear and just go to the goal.

5. Lifts other people’s day.

Be mindful of other people’s feelings. You may not have any idea how difficult the day of that crew worker was or that cashier in the grocery store. Don’t forget to smile and show your appreciation for the service they have done for you.

It wouldn’t hurt to speak goodness to anyone. If you want to feel positive and light in life, then learn to be the light to others. Don't think that this can be a burden. It's not. The gift of happiness surely follows with every appreciation you give.
